Closure of PNG-Indonesia trading post likely to drive cross-border criminal activity into new areas The local authorities in Papua New Guinea's West Sepik (Sandaun) province closed the border with Indonesia on 4 April, shutting down an important trading post.
According to reports in PNG media, the border was closed following fighting between the Indonesian military and armed members of the Indonesian militant separatist group Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM).
The OPM is regularly accused of crossing the porous border into PNG to escape the Indonesian military. For most of its length, the Papua New Guinea-Indonesia border is unmarked. It is also crossed with impunity by locals whose customary lands cross the border, an arrangement that is recognised by both sides but that has been temporarily halted as part of the current border closure.
