Indonesia and France have initiated a project to promote science and technology collaboration in strategic sectors including defence. Called the Nusantara Programme 2016, the initiative is funded by the two governments and jointly managed by Indonesia's Ministry for Research, Technology and Higher Education, and France's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, and the Ministry of National Education and Higher Education and Research.

The Indonesian government said on 2 February that the programme will promote, through funding research and development, areas such as advanced materials, including nanotechnologies, information and communications, and early-warning systems. Defence is one of seven sectors outlined for investment.
