Against the backdrop of the arrival of its first Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) in the Asia-Pacific region, the US Navy (USN) has laid out its plans to enhance partnerships and interoperability with armed forces services in Southeast Asia.

USS Coronado (LCS 4) arrived at Singapore's Changi Naval Base in October 2016, with a Harpoon missile fit and an over-the-horizon anti-ship capability, bringing new opportunities for navies in the region to hone various warfighting capabilities with the USN.

Rear Admiral Don Gabrielson, commander of the USN's Logistics Group Western Pacific (COMLOG WESTPAC), made the comments on 3 November during a media roundtable in Jakarta held as part of the Indo Defence 2016 tri-services forum.

Coronado is currently scheduled to participate in a series of bilateral naval exercises in 2017 between the USN and a number of armed forces services in South and Southeast Asia. The USN has previously deployed its Freedom-class LCSs to the exercises.

"With two [Northrop Grumman MQ-8B] Fire Scout UAVs and a MH-60 naval helicopter on Coronado, the platform will bring opportunities for new training scenarios and missions," said Rear Adm Gabrielson.

He added that the service is in discussions with the Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia Angkatan Laut, or TNI-AL) on how to increase the complexity of the next 'CARAT' exercise between the two countries, given these new capabilities.
