THE Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) was yesterday crowned the overall champion of the 11th Brunei International Skill at Arms Meet (BISAM), winning the BISAM Sultan Cup Trophy for the fourth consecutive year.

Contingent A of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) came in a close second, followed by Contingent B of the RBAF in third place.

TNI’s Army Deputy Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General M Munir, said the premier shooting competition served as an ideal platform to enhance and foster defence ties, while assessing the Indonesian contingent’s performance at the shooting range.

“BISAM is a spectacular and interesting competition. With the growing list of nations joining, it is becoming more competitive,” he commented.

A total of 18 contingents representing 478 top shooters from 16 nations took part in this year’s competition, the biggest participation since the first BISAM in 1985. Contingents from United States and China also made their debut participation in the 11th BISAM.

Undaunted by the increase in competitors, the Army Deputy Chief of Staff said their main focus will be to undergo intensive training in preparation for the next BISAM.

“We don’t look at our opponents first. Our main focus is to prepare as much as we can with our training... My hope for the next competition is to see Brunei’s contingents continue to grow in strength as they have performed well this year, ranking in second,” he said. TNI, he said will continue to strive for victory and contribute to improving the quality of BISAM. He also hoped more countries will participate in the future.

Meanwhile, Brunei’s contingent leader Lieutenant Colonel Abidin Hj Timbang said they are still determined to win back the BISAM Sultan Cup Trophy. He praised TNI’s performance, which “raised the bar” of the competition.

“We will not give up and we are going to train harder,” he said, adding that they plan to identify and nurture new talent in the armed forces.

In an interview with The Brunei Times, participants from the United Kingdom and newcomers United States were impressed with BISAM’s level of competition.

“It is our first time joining in this competition and we are extremely impressed by the high level of competition between the contingents,” said Public Affairs Officer from the US contingent, First Lieutenant Patrick Hamlin.

Asked about Brunei hosting such a premier international shooting competition, he said it is a testament that any country no matter how small can contribute to events that enhance diplomatic relations. “I think diplomacy is not just in regards to world powers, every country in this region, in this world regardless of its size has a part in promoting diplomacy,” Hamlin said. He also conveyed the US contingent leader, Captain Eric Lo’s sentiments expressing how thankful they are to the Monarch, the Royal family and the Ministry of Defence for giving them the opportunity to join BISAM. Sharing his sentiments, Prakash Gurung of the Royal Gurkha Rifle British Army also commented on BISAM’s high level of competition.

“This is my third time joining BISAM and the addition of newcomers (United States, China, Thailand and the Philippines) has made BISAM a tough competition this year. I am also really impressed with Indonesia and Brunei’s performances,” he said.

Gurung said the most memorable part of the 11th BISAM was the opportunity to meet marksmen and shooters from different countries and making new friends. He praised the Sultanate for hosting the competition that brought all the countries together.

“With how well organised and decorated the Penanjong Garrison range is, this beautiful country Brunei has made this BISAM really memorable competition,” he said.
