The Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) has named its seventh Type 214 KSS 2-class diesel-electric submarine (SSK) with air-independent propulsion and is targeting to launch the vessel in April 2016.
A spokesperson from South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) told IHS Jane's on 1 March that the 1,700-tonne vessel has been named Hong Beom-do after a South Korean national hero and given the pennant number 079.
HHI is building Hong Beon-do at its facilities in Ulsan, where the class' ninth hull is also under construction.
