Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has confirmed to Naval News during Indo Defence in Jakarta that the first of two Italian-made PPA purchased by Indonesia, KRI Brawijaya (320), is scheduled to arrive in September, with the second, KRI Prabu Siliwangi (321), following in December.

Both vessels will be jointly crewed by Indonesian and Italian naval personnel during the voyage from Italy to Indonesia. Furthermore, Italian Navy warships may also escort parts of the journey for support and security.

These two warships were originally built in ‘Light Plus’ configuration for the Italian Navy. However, it will be delivered to the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) in a Fitted For But Not With (FFBNW) condition—equipped with their full suite of sensors, main gun, and cannons but without missiles which are not covered by the current contract.

Naval News understands that TNI AL has already expressed interest in upgrading both vessels to a ‘Full’ configuration and choosing the Aster 30 as the primary surface-to-air missile for the two ships. To note, in response to rising demand and the shifting geopolitical landscape, MBDA has significantly ramped up its missile production capacity. The company has announced that its output in 2025 is expected to double compared to 2023 levels.

Fincantieri has indicated that such an upgrade and armaments installation can be performed domestically, and the company is open to collaborating with Indonesian shipyards to carry out the upgrades.

Fincantieri also told Naval News that future PPA purchases by Indonesia could be built locally under a co-production arrangement. This aligns with Indonesia’s desire to strengthen its domestic shipbuilding capabilities and reduce dependency on foreign suppliers.

U212 NFS and Critical Infrastructure Protection
In addition to its surface ship offerings, Fincantieri reaffirmed to Naval News that it continues to offer its U212 NFS submarine to the Indonesian Navy. The advanced conventional submarine, originally developed for the Italian Navy, is being positioned as a solution to meet TNI AL’s needs for operating at least 12 submarines.

Fincantieri is also expanding its focus by offering solutions to help Indonesia better protect its critical maritime and naval infrastructure, such as underwater cables, pipelines, naval bases, and offshore installations. For this purpose, during the Indo Defence Expo, Fincantieri signed a Technical Collaboration Agreement with PT Prima Maju Mapan (PMM), a private Indonesian company.

According to Naval News sources, the proposed solutions could include Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) with Launch and Recovery Systems (LARS), Omega360 Radar System, and Black Scorpion mini torpedoes.
