Chinese company Aerospace Long March International (ALIT) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malaysian firm Aneka Bekal Sdn Bhd to offer a self-propelled surface-to-air missile (SAM) system to Malaysia, state news agencies in both countries have reported.
The MoU - signed during Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's visit to Beijing which ended 1 June - features the two companies collaborating on marketing the vertically launched LY-80 SAM system to the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF). Spokespersons from the two companies have not been contactable.
According to reports, the agreement also covers the transfer of technologies to Malaysia to facilitate localised licenced production and maintenance should the LY-80 be selected to meet MAF requirements.
